Guitar Tuner for Standard Tuning
This free online guitar tuner listens through your microphone and shows you exactly how far each string is from standard tuning. Pluck a string and the tuner tells you which string it heard, how many cents you are off, and whether to loosen or tighten the peg. Nothing you play is recorded, stored or sent anywhere; the sound is analysed right in your browser. Below you will find every other tuning this site offers, each with its own tuner.
Standard tuning suits almost everything a guitar player does, from first lessons to recording, and it is the home page of this site, which has a dedicated tuner for every other tuning too. If you are coming back from a lower tuning, remember that every string has to come back up, so work from the 6th string to the 1st and check each one twice. New strings stretch for a while, so expect to retune a few times in the first days after a string change.

How to tune from standard
- Open the tuner and allow the microphone when the browser asks. The page is set to standard tuning already, so every string has the right target note.
- Pluck the 6th string and watch the tuner. It shows the note it heard and how many cents you are off.
- If the note is too low, tighten the peg slowly; if too high, loosen it. Stop when the needle settles in the middle and the string shows as in tune.
- Move from the 6th string to the 1st, plucking each one in turn and adjusting until the tuner confirms it.
- When every string is in tune, strum a few chords. New strings stretch, so check the tuning again after a few minutes of playing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard tuning for a guitar?
Standard tuning runs from the thickest to the thinnest string as E, A, D, G, B and E. It is the default tuning for most lessons, chord charts and tab, and it is the reference every other tuning on this site is built from. If your guitar has drifted, the tuner shows how far each string is from this setup.
How do I use the tuner with my microphone?
Press start and allow the microphone when the browser asks. Pluck one string at a time and keep the other strings quiet. The tuner listens, names the string it heard and shows how many cents you are off, then tells you which way to turn the peg. The sound is analysed in your browser and nothing is recorded or stored.
What if the microphone is blocked or missing?
Allow the microphone in your browser settings and reload the page. If your device has no microphone, or the browser cannot use one on this site, tune by ear instead: every string has a play button that sounds its target note, and you match your string to it.
